A Quantitative Method to Evaluate the Performance of Climate Models in Simulating Global Tropical Cyclones

چکیده

The capability to reproduce tropical cyclones (TCs) realistically is important for climate models. A recent study proposed a method quantitative evaluation of model simulations TC track characteristics in specific basin, which can be used rank multiple models based on their performance. As an extension this method, we propose more comprehensive here evaluate the simulating multi-faceted global TCs. Compared with original new considers not only tracks but also intensity and frequency. Moreover, applicable domain. In study, apply performance eight that participated phase 5 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project. It found that, overall simulations, CSIRO Mk3.6.0 performs best, followed by GFDL CM3, MPI-ESM-LR, MRI-CGCM3 each these TCs differs substantially over different ocean basins.

Tropical Cyclones and Global Climate Change: A Post-IPCC Assessment

The very limited instrumental record makes extensive analyses of the natural variability of global tropical cyclone activities difficult in most of the tropical cyclone basins. However, in the two regions where reasonably reliable records exist (the North Atlantic and the western North Pacific), substantial multidecadal variability (particularly for intense Atlantic hurricanes) is found, but th...

Evaluating the performance of Atmosphere-Ocean Global Circulation Models (AOGCM) in simulating temperature variable in Ahwaz and Abadan stations

Climate changes caused by global warming has presented challenges to human society. Studying the Changes of climate variables in the future decades by using output data’s of Atmosphere-Ocean Global Circulation Models (AOGCM) is a way of perusing climate fluctuation in a region. In this study, the focus is on the AOGCM proceeds in simulating of variable temperature in Ahwaz and Abadan stations. ...

Workshop on Tropical Cyclones and Climate

In final form 31 October 2006 ©2007 American Meteorological Society ropical cyclones (TCs) are among the most destructive of natural disasters. The statistics of TC occurrence and intensity are influenced by variations in the large-scale climate, but many aspects of this influence are poorly understood. Even less is known about the influence of tropical cyclones on the large-scale climate. Thes...
